As with any marketplace, the risk sits with individual sellers, not the platform. As a buyer, pay only inside the app, check a seller's ratings and reviews before you bid, and never agree to pay a seller directly off the app.
Whatnot fees in Canada (September 2026)
On September 21, 2026, Whatnot replaced its flat commission with tiers based on your sales over each four-week period. Your total sales across all categories set your tier, and your category sets the rate within it. For general merchandise, the rates Whatnot publishes for Canada are:

Other categories have their own rates. Fashion, trading cards, sports cards and collectibles each have separate schedules, and coins start at 4%. How to start selling on Whatnot in Canada
- Apply to sell. In the Whatnot app, apply for selling access and describe what you plan to sell. Whatnot reviews applications before you can go live.
- Set up CAD payouts. Link a Canadian bank account. Canadian balances are paid out in CAD, and PayPal can't be used for CAD transactions.
- Choose your shipping provider. In Seller Hub > Shipping > Preferred Shipping Provider (mobile app), pick ChitChats or Canada Post. ChitChats has 66 drop-off locations in BC, Alberta, Ontario, Quebec and Atlantic Canada. Labels are generated in Seller Hub after your show.
- Plan your inventory. Group smaller items into themed lots (kitchen, beauty, phone accessories), and keep standout items to sell on their own.
- Schedule a regular show. Going live at the same day and time each week makes it easier for buyers to find you again.
- Start low and talk to your viewers. Many sellers open bids low to get momentum. Show each item clearly and say its condition honestly: open-box, used, or missing parts.
Shipping on Whatnot in Canada
Whatnot generates shipping labels in the app. Canadian sellers choose a default provider: ChitChats (a low-cost shipper whose carriers, including Canada Post, handle final delivery) or Canada Post directly. You can switch the default at any time in the mobile app. The change applies to orders that don't have a label yet. ChitChats ships anywhere in Canada and internationally. Sellers in Atlantic Canada pay a fee to drop off at Maritime Bus locations.
Is Whatnot worth it for Canadian sellers?
It depends on what you sell and whether you enjoy selling live. Whatnot suits sellers who can go live regularly and have a steady supply of mixed items to show one after another. You avoid writing a listing for every item, and commission is only charged on the item price. It suits you less if you sell a few high-value items that buyers research first, or if you can't commit to a regular schedule. Many resellers use Whatnot alongside Facebook Marketplace, Kijiji and eBay rather than instead of them.
