The holiday season is the highest-margin window of the year for Canadian resellers β but only if you buy at the right time. Buy too early and you tie up capital. Buy too late and you miss the sell-through window. Here's the calendar.
The Holiday Reselling Calendar
| Month | What to Buy | Why |
|---|---|---|
| August | Halloween + early holiday decor | Resell at Halloween markups in October |
| September | Toys, board games, kids' inventory | Build inventory for November sell-through |
| October | Electronics, kitchen gadgets, gift-y items | Peak gift-search starts in early November |
| November | Holiday-specific overstock | Last reasonable buying window |
| December | Pause β sell down inventory | Don't add inventory you can't move |
| January | Post-Christmas overstock + returns | Highest-margin month of the year for buyers |
| February | Valentine's, seasonal turnover | Quick category flips |
The Q4 Strategy β Sell, Don't Just Stock
Most Canadian resellers focus Q4 on stocking up. The smarter approach: sell down your existing inventory aggressively from late November onward. December buyers pay more for fast-shipping gift items than at any other time of year.
- Drop prices 15% on slow-moving inventory the week of Black Friday
- Highlight "ships same-day" on every Marketplace and eBay listing
- Run Whatnot live shows 2x/week through mid-December
- Stop ordering new pallets after November 15 unless category-specific holiday inventory
The January Window β Best Pallets of the Year
The first three weeks of January are the most under-rated buying window for Canadian liquidation. Here's why:
- Massive return surge: Holiday gift returns hit warehouses by January 4β10
- Retailer reset: Major chains liquidate unsold holiday inventory to make planogram room
- Low reseller competition: Many resellers are on holiday or post-holiday break
- Best per-item costs of the year: Some January pallets land at 12β18% of MSRP vs the 25β35% norm
What to buy in January:
- Holiday-themed overstock (decor, wrapping, lights) β store and resell in OctoberβNovember
- Toys and games β sell down through February for birthday season
- Kitchen and small appliances β strong year-round demand
- Apparel β winter clearance + spring forward
- Electronics β peak holiday return volume
Categories That Sell Best Before Christmas
Toys & Games
Peak demand: November 15 β December 18. After December 20, demand drops sharply β anything still listed should be priced down 30% by December 22.
Kitchen Small Appliances
Air fryers, blenders, stand mixers, coffee makers β gift staples. Demand peaks early November through mid-December.
Electronics Accessories
Wireless earbuds, smart-home devices, gaming accessories, charging products. Demand stays steady November through early December.
Personal Care & Beauty
Fragrance sets, hair tools, skincare devices. Strong gift category β demand stays through December 23.
Home Decor & Bedding
Surprisingly strong gift category. Sell-through November through mid-December.
What to Avoid Buying for Q4
- Heavy items (furniture, exercise equipment) β too slow to ship in Canada Post peak season
- Late-arriving freight β anything not in your possession by November 20 likely misses the season
- Niche electronics β gift buyers want mainstream, not niche
- Apparel without size labels β gift returns spike on apparel
The December Trap
Don't keep buying pallets through December. Two reasons:
- By December 10, Canada Post is already at capacity β your shipping rates and timelines worsen daily.
- Any pallet bought December 5+ becomes January inventory at best β you'll have paid Q4 prices for Q1 sell-through.
